Teaching English in Mexico: English Language Teaching in Cancun Part 2

In this article we'll continue with job opportunities in Cancun, Mexico's jewel of the Yucatan. Here's more grist for the English language teaching in Cancun, Mexico job mill. Starting off is:

Colegio Britanico

Pargo No. 24, SM 3 (entrance is on Avenida Bompak) Cancún

884 - 1295, 884 - 1612

FAX: 884 - 0914

E-mail: british@cancun.com.mx

A fully bilingual English - Spanish school with students from Kindergarten through high school level. The high school level is taught with half the subjects in English and the others in Spanish, so you could teach not only English but additional subjects as well if you're qualified. Courses like U.S. History, North American Culture, general science, biology, chemistry, social studies, and art, to mention a few, are among the possibilities. If you bone up on your History, you never know...

Bachillerato Tecnologico del Caribe

Jaime Torres Bodet

Av. Lopez Portillo 413

Region 91 Cancún

888 - 3802

Boasting itself a Tri-lingual school, (English, Portuguese and German) it's principal function is as a university prep. School for students with aspirations (and the money) to enter Mexico's over-burdened university system. It's well known that a working knowledge of computer systems and fluency in English are the keys to guarantee employment in this country. They're in the curriculum of virtually every university-prep school and technical institute. Prior experience and at least a TEFL certificate are preferred.

Colegio Ecab A.C.

Calle 93 Norte S/N Region 93A (behind the Plaza Kabah) Cancun

Telefax: 888 - 7980

Another Tri-lingual school, (English, French, Spanish) that deals in university prep but also has students in the elementary and high school levels so there's plenty of maneuvering room for employment. You should fax them as to upcoming possibilities then follow-up with an appointment when you're in the area. Some staff members are fluent in English so you shouldn't have problems getting information or interviewing here.

Colegio De Las Americas

Av. Lopez Portillo SM - 59, M-17, L-9 Cancún

886 - 6020

Another good bet is this bilingual systems school which has students from Kindergarten through high school. As mentioned earlier, it's possible to teach not only English, but other subjects in English. Since this is definitely an often-overlooked option, it's well worth investigating if you've an in-depth knowledge of a particular area. If your degree is in literature or history or science, etc. you're already well on your way. Pick up two or three textbooks before you go to use as teaching and/or reference material and you'll be in big demand. You can feature these points during your interview and mention them in your query and cover letters.

Gonzalo Guerrero Institute

Av. No Sunyaxchen 38 SM 25

Correos 28 SM

884 - 8122

With students from elementary school through high school and college preparation, English is strongly influenced in their curriculum. Students can sign up here all year to create opportunities for teachers throughout the year. related to recruitment of experienced teachers is preferable to have your documents (in English) available for inspection.

Good luck.
